South Africa
At least five people have died so far in street protests in South Africa’s capital, Pretoria, after police on Thursday said they had discovered two more bodies.
The police however say despite lootings in parts of the capital on Thursday, the situation is generally calm now.
Three deaths had been recorded earlier with two of them being looters who were shot dead on Tuesday night. The other had been shot dead on Sunday as party leaders debated the choice of mayoral candidates for the ruling party.
The clashes broke out in Pretoria on Monday evening after the publication of the ANC’s mayoral list.
The choice of Thoko Didiza as candidate for Tshwane was rejected by some residents who resorted to setting buses and cars ablaze.
Close to 200 protesters were arrested during the two day protests after they allegedly attacked shops in Pretoria.
